Visit California lists a west entrance at the town of Joshua Tree, a north entrance at Twentynine Palms and a south entrance off Box Canyon Road and Interstate 10. Which one a home sits near changes the guest as much as the drive.
Climbing
Across roughly 400 formations, per Visit California. Climbers book differently: early starts, gear, shorter notice and a strong preference for shade and water over styling.
Dark sky
The Park Service describes Joshua Tree as having one of the darkest night skies in southern California and holds Silver Tier designation from the International Dark-Sky Association, awarded at a ceremony in August 2017.
Local culture
A former live-in motion-picture set founded in part by Roy Rogers and Gene Autry, with a live-music venue attached. It gives a stay an evening that is not a drive to another town.

Stay mix
This is what every local short-term rental rule is written about. County Chapter 84.28 defines short term as 30 consecutive calendar days or less and requires a permit before advertising. Twentynine Palms defines a Vacation Home Rental as a minimum of two consecutive nights up to 30 consecutive calendar days. Yucca Valley regulates short-term vacation rentals under Ordinance 312.
Longer stays generally fall outside these short-term rental definitions, but that is a statement about the short-term ordinance, not a blanket permission. Zoning, licensing, landlord-tenant law, tax treatment and private governing documents all still apply, and they are separate questions. Confirm the intended use with the authority that governs your parcel before you list it that way.

The National Park Service identifies October through May as Joshua Tree National Park's busy season and says springtime and holidays are the busiest times of the year, with the park able to get very crowded. Summer is the quiet half, and it is quiet for a reason the Park Service states plainly: extreme heat poses a very serious safety risk. Checked 2026-09-20.

It is a real, sourceable characteristic rather than a marketing line. The Park Service describes Joshua Tree as having one of the darkest night skies in southern California and holds Silver Tier International Dark Sky Park designation. It also notes that most of the remaining light pollution comes from Los Angeles, Las Vegas and the Coachella Valley, and asks neighbouring communities for shielded, warm, moderate outdoor lighting. It is a different question, not a workaround. Stays over 30 consecutive calendar days generally fall outside the local short-term rental definitions, but zoning, licensing, tax, landlord-tenant law and private governing documents all still apply and have to be confirmed separately with the authority that governs your parcel.
