The short answer Indio is the most open of the five city programs, and the most event-shaped. The City requires a business licence, a short-term rental permit and transient occupancy tax registration; since June 15, 2017 the licence and permit have been issued as one combined document that renews automatically together. The page describes no separate festival-period permit, so ask the City directly how April event weekends are treated at your address before advertising one.

The guest

Why people book Indio.

Festivals

More than a million people a year.

The destination page describes Indio attracting more than 1 million people each year for events including the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival and Stagecoach Country Music Festival at the Empire Polo Grounds, both listed in April.

Downtown

New venues and public art.

The destination describes downtown Indio adding dining and retail, a new City amphitheatre called Center Stage, the Little Street Music Hall, and murals including Happy Alley on Miles Avenue.

Year-round draws

Fairgrounds, museum, casino.

The Riverside County Fairgrounds host the Riverside County Fair and Date Festival; the Coachella Valley History Museum is described as home to the world’s only date museum; Fantasy Springs Resort Casino runs a touring-act calendar.

Operating here

Three things an Indio owner should get right.

  1. The combined licence

Business licence and STR permit are issued as one document and renew together. The City page states that from February 15, 2022 the fee to obtain and annually renew the permit is $1,633.00, in addition to the business licence fee and tax. The current ordinance was adopted at the December 1, 2021 Council meeting.

  2. The event-weekend question

Festival weekends are when occupancy, parking and noise conditions get scrutinised hardest, and they are also when guests push hardest against them. The City page describes no separate festival-period permit. Ask, in writing, before you advertise an April weekend.

  3. The paperwork the City publishes

The page links an indemnification agreement, a Good Neighbor Brochure, a short-term rental information form and an acknowledgement form, plus a map of registered rentals and a complaint hotline. Work through them before listing rather than after a complaint.

And the association question applies here as everywhere in this valley: a recorded CC&R or community rule can prohibit the use regardless of the City permit.

  • A city permit is not an HOA clearance. Much of this valley sits inside country-club and gated communities, and a recorded CC&R or association rule can prohibit short-term rental outright even where the city would issue a permit.
  • Programs, forms, fees and tax treatment change, and one change is already dated: Riverside County lists Ordinance No. 927.3 as effective September 24, 2026 and the updated registration fees of Ordinance No. 671.25 as effective October 25, 2026. Recheck the controlling authority before launch, renewal or a material listing change.

Indio questions

Can I rent to festival guests in Indio?

Only with an active permit, and only on terms you have confirmed. The City's page, checked 2026-09-20, describes the general short-term rental permit requirement and links the ordinance adopted at the December 1, 2021 Council meeting, but it does not describe a separate festival-period permit or a different rule for event weekends. Ask the City directly how those weekends are treated at your address, and expect occupancy, parking and noise conditions to be enforced hardest then.

What does an Indio permit cost?

The City page states that starting February 15, 2022 the fee to obtain a permit and renew it annually is $1,633.00, in addition to the business licence fee and tax. That figure was read on the City page on 2026-09-20; confirm it with the City before budgeting, since fees change.

Is Indio only an April market?

No. The destination describes a downtown adding dining, retail and two new music venues, the Riverside County Fairgrounds hosting the County Fair and Date Festival, the Coachella Valley History Museum and Fantasy Springs Resort Casino with a regular touring lineup. April is the peak of a wider calendar, not the whole of it.
