A 2.5 mile moderate trail ascending from Humber Park to Saddle Junction, with 1,700 feet of gain from a 6,400-foot trailhead. An Adventure Pass is required for parking, $5 a day or $30 a year, and interagency passes are accepted. Day use permits are required for all wilderness trails, and Devils Slide permits are limited on Saturdays and Sundays from Memorial weekend to Labor Day weekend.

Forest orders reach the doorstep

The surrounding San Bernardino National Forest carries fire restrictions in season; the Forest Service listed them under Forest Order 05-12-00-26-05 dated June 9, 2026, and showed fire danger as High for the Idyllwild, San Jacinto and Santa Rosa zone. At the cabin, the County allows outdoor fire areas only when no state or local ban applies.

The guest and the work

Early starts, small parties, wet gear.

A hiking and climbing guest is easy on the house and specific about a handful of things. Meeting them well costs very little and shows up in reviews.

They leave before dawn. Car doors at 5 a.m. on a quiet mountain road are the classic neighbour complaint. Quiet hours run 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. under County Ordinance No. 847, and the arrival guide should say so plainly.
They need permit information, not access. Point guests to the Forest Service source for current permits, quotas and conditions. The home does not supply access and should never imply it does.
Parties are small. Group size on both trails is limited to 12, which sits naturally under the County's occupancy ceilings.
Gear comes back wet. Boot storage, a drying space and a durable entry floor do more here than another decorative upgrade.
Parking is still the constraint. On-site parking for the maximum approved occupants is required and off-site parking is not permitted, and Humber Park parking is a separate matter with its own pass requirement.
